As health care costs continue to rise at an unsustainable pace and the burden of diseases escalates, employers must innovate in health care and benefit design to maintain economic sustainability. Business Group employers expected health care costs to increases 5.0% in 2016, but—on average—large employers kept cost increases to 4.1%.

In 2017, employers are deploying a number of tactics to lower health care trend and improve the health care experience for employees and their dependents. These may include:

  • Pharmacy management techniques (aimed at specialty and traditional)
  • Consumer-directed health plans, especially a full-replacement approach
  • High-touch navigational or navigator services
  • Disease and condition management
  • Initiatives to improve employee well-being
  • Routing employees and dependents to high-value health care providers (e.g., ACOs, PCMHs)
