Employers play a major role in setting the stage for health equity around the world.

Health inclusion is the principle that everyone, regardless of their circumstances, should have the opportunity to achieve their highest level of health. It recognizes that gaps in the system—often attributable to race, socioeconomic status, geography and other social determinants of health—impact access to care.1 Movement forward will require commitments to uncovering bias and discrimination, understanding and changing the experiences of historically marginalized populations, implementing benefits and resources to address unmet needs and taking action alongside community and government organizations to drive change.

Employers have an important role to play in supporting employees and their dependents in reaching their full health potential. Each employer’s path toward health inclusion will look different based on business and workforce priorities, culture and processes. For example, one employer may choose to start with an assessment of the company’s current benefits in tandem with available data on healthcare engagement and outcomes to identify disparities and focus on implementing the most impactful interventions for its workforce. Another may take a culture-driven, fiscally conservative approach, focusing on employee feedback and prioritizing low-cost interventions and partnerships to build momentum.

The Employer Guide to Health Inclusion shares actionable ideas for employers committed to advancing health inclusion. The Guide focuses on four domains: healthcare access, equitable experience, inclusive engagement and social determinants of health. It includes key employer strategies, important considerations related to global implementation and links to related resources. You can access each part separately or link to the entire Guide.
