Paid Sick Leave Laws and the Impact on Employer Leave Policies
The purpose of this survey was to learn how employers have adjusted their leave policies in order to comply with various state and locality paid sick leave (PSL) laws. The survey also looks specifically at paid sick leave programs by location, type of leave program (i.e., sick leave bank or paid time off PTO), and leave accrual process. Additionally, this survey looks at attendance policies and accountability. Fifty-six members of the Business Group responded to this survey, although the number may vary from question to question.

Personal Leave and Bereavement Leave
The purpose of this survey was to determine whether employers offer personal and bereavement leave to employees. Beyond the simple offering of these categories of leave, the survey also looked at eligibility, number of days of personal and bereavement leave offered throughout the year and leave accrual. Although 44 members of the Business Group responded to this survey, there was some variation in the number responding to each question.

Voters Approve Marijuana Initiatives in 7 States
Last Tuesday California, Massachusetts and Nevada voters approved ballot initiatives legalizing the recreational use of Marijuana for those age 21+. Maine also approved Marijuana for recreational use, but given the close vote tally (roughly 3,000 separate approval from dismissal) it may be subject to a recall. Additionally, Florida, North Dakota and Arkansas voters approved ballot initiatives allowing for the use of medical marijuana.

Quick Survey Findings: Absence and Disability Case Management
The purpose of this survey is to determine how employers administer and manage their absence and disability case management programs. The survey looks specifically at whether case management programs are run internally or through a vendor, and how those programs are staffed. Additionally, the survey looks at whether employers have case management programs for operations outside the U.S., and, if so, how those programs are administered and managed. Twenty-one members of the Business Group responded to this survey.

Maternity and Parental Leave
The purpose of this survey is to understand how employers handle maternity and parental leave benefits for all types of parents. The survey focuses on short-term disability (STD) benefits for birth mothers and paid/unpaid parental leave offered to all parents, including how the benefits are utilized and communicated. The survey also looks at additional programs and services that are offered to parents as well as how these services are communicated. Supreme Court Rules that Plan Administrator's Potential Conflict of Interest Is a Factor in Suits Over Benefit Denials
In a 6-3 decision, the US Supreme Court backed a lower court ruling that said that courts should consider a plan administrator's potential conflict of interest when it denies a claim for health or disability benefits if the reviewer has a financial incentive to deny a claim.
