The role of the employer in health and benefits has never been easy. Today, employers are responsible for an ever-widening range of programs and vendors to manage, heightened expectations from employees, and surging costs, all set against the backdrop of an industry that is hyper fluid and growing in complexity seemingly by the day. The role of the employer has never been as critical, nor as challenging.

Yet, some in the industry are increasingly scrutinizing employer sponsored plans - saying employers should do more to drive the disruption required in the industry. While the challenges that plague health care delivery and affordability cannot be placed at the feet of any one stakeholder group, the tone and tenor of discourse across the industry increasingly seems to place blame on employers and other entities in the industry. This is unproductive and can be viewed as self-serving, opportunistic or worse - as a distraction and deflection from the real issues. For sure, there is an opportunity for all parties to step up and do more. Core to our ethos at Business Group on Health is collectively convening and collaborating to Drive Change Together – our tagline. No one stakeholder group bears sole responsibility for the woes of the industry, nor can one be expected to remedy those challenges alone.

For five decades, Business Group on Health has been the preeminent and objective voice for health, well-being and workforce strategy issues facing employers. Our membership is reflective of the industry overall, a mix of employers and industry partners, bringing together diverse perspectives. We bring to the market a point of view that is well-researched, objective, and unbiased. Along with our members, we have been the leaders in driving change in the U.S. and globally. Our collaborative efforts drive toward one goal - to create a better model for health and well-being for organizations and their employees around the world.

In response to the market “noise” we have crafted this position paper, in which we highlight the important role employers have played, and continue to play, along with their industry partners, as drivers of effective innovation in service to their workforce and organization. Along the way, we highlight areas where industry stakeholders, including employers, must further collaborate to drive change. Working together, we can improve quality, manage costs, and enhance the experience for employees and their families around the world.
