Over the past decade, employers worldwide have increased their focus on programs and strategies to support their workforce's leave and time away needs and to bolster organizational strategic priorities related to workforce well-being. As employers have wrestled with these challenges, Business Group on Health has supported members with written content, topical webinars and the Leave Optimization Forum, a collaborative effort of employers and industry partners working together on cutting edge leave and time away approaches.

Against that backdrop, the Business Group has summarized insights gleaned from its members, coupled with findings from the 2024 Employer Leave Strategy and Transformation Survey, to identify five key areas about leave and time away to consider in the coming year.

Click on the icons below for data, information and standout ideas on each of these five areas, which will help your organization with its own leave strategy.

01 Step up the leave experience. Curate an optimal leave experience leading up to, during and after a period of absence. 02 Weigh core leave benefits. Revisit leave structures—sick/ vacation bank, PTO and unlimited leave—to determine which is best for your organization. 03 Consider caregiver leave. Explore leave opportunities for those with caregiving responsibilities, as this kind of leave is anticipated to increase in the next 2 years. 04 Monitor paid leave laws. Monitor states/localities with paid family and sick leave laws and adapt your offerings to remain compliant in those localities and to weigh the implications for your overall leave strategy. 05 Establish a global leave policy. Create a global leave policy detailing leave categories and duration to foster equitable offerings around the world.
