A total of 81 large employer members of Business Group on Health responded to this survey, conducted between August 3 and August 10, 2021. The purpose of this survey was to determine what approaches large employers are taking to reopen worksites and safely return employees back to their work setting.

Key Takeaways

  • As of this survey, 28% of large employers had already adapted their return-to-worksite policy due to the Delta variant and the recent wave of infections. Another 60% were reviewing their plans.
  • Only 13% of large employers are currently mandating COVID-19 vaccines. Some large employers are considering implementing a vaccine mandate in the next few months, but implementation would be more likely if the vaccines were FDA (Food and Drug Administration) approved or federal authorities extended additional legal protection for employers to implement mandates.
  • Beyond mandates, employers have also implemented numerous strategies to encourage vaccination, ranging from additional PTO to different types of financial incentives.
  • 44% of large employers are requiring all employees to wear masks at company locations, regardless of vaccination status. An additional 21% have the same requirement for employees working in areas with high levels of COVID-19 transmission.
