Business Group on Health Honors The Walt Disney Company With Prestigious Helen Darling Award

Disney Recognized for Innovative Shift Toward Value-Based Care

WASHINGTON, D.C., Jan 25 — Business Group on Health today honored The Walt Disney Company with its prestigious Helen Darling Award for Excellence in Health Care Value and Innovation, for the company’s successful disruption of the traditional fee-for-service health care payment model and its innovative shift toward value-based care.

The move to value-based care has led to improvements and more flexibility for thousands of Disney employees across central Florida and serves as a model for other employers in the region, further influencing the delivery of care in the community.

“The Walt Disney Company is most deserving of the Helen Darling Award,” said Ellen Kelsay, president and CEO of Business Group on Health. “Through a direct contracting process, Disney curated a high-performing network of physicians and tied incentives to patient outcomes and experience. Employees’ consistent level of satisfaction with these plans, along with the reductions in total cost of care and increase in quality outcomes, demonstrate a resounding win.”

Kelsay added, “By reimagining health care payment models and leveraging their onsite clinics, Disney has provided its members with flexibility in receiving care, enhanced care navigation and access.”

Eric Chaisson, senior vice president, Total Rewards, The Walt Disney Company, said, “Providing innovative benefits to access comprehensive and quality care is one of the many ways we invest in our employees, and receiving this prestigious award further recognizes our commitment to the well-being of our team members around the world.”

Jim Huffman, chair of the board of Business Group on Health, said, “On behalf of Business Group on Health and the board of directors, we are proud to recognize The Walt Disney Company for clearly demonstrating that alternative health care models can yield better outcomes than the more traditional paradigms of fee-for-service plans. We commend Disney’s leadership for modeling how to improve the quality of health care while controlling costs.”

The Helen Darling Award, named for a former president of Business Group on Health, recognizes an outstanding employer with a comprehensive, innovative program and purchasing strategy that promotes efficient and cost¬-effective use of health care resources, supports movement toward value in health care purchasing and program evaluation, demonstrates a track record of enhancing the employee health experience, and deploys value principles in health care purchasing.

The honor was announced at the Business Group’s 2023 Employers’ Summit on Health Care Cost & Delivery in Washington, D.C. Previous winners include General Motors, Boeing, Cerner Corporation, Costco and Walmart, among others.
