The National Business Group on Health is pleased to provide case studies of employers leading the way with successful tobacco cessation programs and policies.
Employers were interviewed about their tobacco cessation policies, programs, and implementation strategies, including two that provided valuable perspectives on tobacco use outside the United States. As these companies unanimously attest: Despite various obstacles and complexities, it is possible!
Guidance for other employers seeking to roll out an effective program included:
- Construct a clear and concise communications effort to achieve a high rate of participation and help employees understand new policies and benefits.
- Frame communication strategies around a common goal of better health for employees, not cost savings or liability issues.
- Create a "brand" around the cessation program to help differentiate it from other benefit offerings.
- Utilize a variety of communication methods such as:
- Employer's intranet
- Home mailings
- Mass e-mails
- Posters
- Employee newsletters
- Recruit company volunteers to assist with support and encouragement for employees trying to quit using tobacco.
- Be patient — recognize that this kind of culture change can take time.
The Business Group is grateful to the following companies for sharing their time, experiences, and expertise.
