Prostate Cancer

U.S. Preventive Services Task Force Screening and Preventive Medicine Recommendations

The USPSTF concludes that the current evidence is insufficient to assess the balance of benefits and harms of prostate cancer screening in men younger than age 75 years. (I)

The USPSTF recommends against screening for prostate cancer in men age 75 years or older. (D)

Any malignant or cancerous growth of the prostate gland (a small gland found in males near the bladder that is a part of the male reproductive system).

Why Employers Should Care?

Prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer found in American men. Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in men.
  • New cases estimated for 2009: 192,2801
  • Deaths estimated for 2009: 27,3601
  • Approximately 91 percent of males diagnosed were 55 years or older.1
  • Accounts for 31% of new cancers in men.2
  • While 1 man in 6 will get prostate cancer during his lifetime, only 1 man in 35 will die of this disease.1
  • Direct annual spending for prostate cancer is $3.6 billion.2
  • Age, race, nationality, family history, and diet are all risk factors for developing prostate cancer.

What Employers Should Do?

  • Annual physician visits — Although not directly recommended, annual visits may provide an opportunity for discovery of other health conditions.
  • Recommend high-risk employees receive information regarding screenings and treatment for prostate cancer during annual medical examinations.
