Pancreatic Cancer

U.S. Preventive Services Task Force Screening and Preventive Medicine Recommendations

The USPSTF recommends against routine screening for pancreatic cancer in asymptomatic adults using abdominal palpation, ultrasonography, or serologic markers. (D)

Any malignant or cancerous growth of the pancreas (an organ in the digestive system that produces hormones such as insulin and enzymes for digestion).

Why Employers Should Care?

In the United States, pancreatic cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer-related death in males and the fifth leading cause of cancer-related death in females. Because it is usually diagnosed at an advanced stage, the survival rate is poor compared to other types of cancer.
  • New estimated cases for 2009: 42,470 (21,050 men and 21,420 women)1
  • Deaths estimated for 2009: 35,2401
  • African Americans, especially males, have higher incidence rates than whites.1
  • Pancreatic cancer incidence and mortality are higher in men than in women.1
  • It is estimated that approximately $1.5 billion is spent in the United States each year on treatment of pancreatic cancer.2
  • Age, gender, race, smoking, diet, obesity and diabetes increase risk of pancreatic cancer

What Employers Should Do?

  • Smoking cessation programs — Since tobacco is a factor in the development of pancreatic cancer, worksite programs aimed at reducing or eliminating these factors could prove beneficial.
  • Nutrition programs — Offer programs that encourage proper nutrition, including the proper balance of fats, carbohydrates such as fiber and sweets.
  • Recommend high-risk employees receive screenings during annual medical examinations.
